To add to the already incredibly functionality of this product, Purigen can actually be regenerated to retain efficiency and effectiveness in the long term. As it adsorbs waste products, the beads will change colour from a pale blonde to a dark brown, nearly black coloration. Once it is exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach will literally "burn off" the organics that have been removed from the tank. Watch out for products that claim to be regenerable with a brine solution. That is the regeneration procedure for ion-exchange purposes. Brine solutions will not remove necessary harmful organics. While such resins have a limited capacity for organic adsorption, a brine regeneration process only replaces removed ionic compounds and it does not destroy large organic molecules that were removed, which is the primary function of organic adsorption resins in the first place.

The media is completely inert and will not break down, nor does it need to be replaced. It is also compatible with nearly every type of wet and wet-dry filter.
Use 250 mL of Seachem Matrix for each 200 L (50 US gallons) of aquarium water. The media may be placed in any kind of filter and is noticeably effective when used in a canister filter. The media is sufficiently large enough that no filter bag should be required for most applications. It works quite well in a variety of drip tray systems but may find that the larger Seachem Pond Matrix is better suited for such applications

Compared to other major brands, Seachem MatrixCarbon has the lowest detectable leachable phosphate content, performs twice as well with the total capacity to remove organic matter, and has the best rate of adsorption and longest duration of use. This high-quality, bituminous coal carbon media maintains optimal water clarity in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
250 mL will easily treat 400 L (100 US gallons) of aquarium water for several months. Place the media in a filter bag. Rinse before use. For best results, Seachem MatrixCarbon should be placed in such a way as to maximize the flow of clean water running through it. The product can be effectively used in a canister filter, chemical filtration module, box filter, or any high flow area of a trickle filter.

The media itself is an economical, natural, porous material sporting a pore distribution, shape and large surface area that encourages beneficial anaerobic nitrification within the first few millimetres of depth and anaerobic denitrification at the core. Additionally, the media helps to remove harmful nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and organics that can cause harm or even kill your aquatic inhabitants.
Live rocks or reef rocks remove nitrate by anaerobic denitrification and Seachem De*Nitrate removes nitrate using the same process, except the efficiency of this process is magnified several folds by directing the water to filter through the porous filter media. Due to this process, excessive flow rates should be avoided, as they may impede the development of an adequate anaerobic environment to support denitrifying bacteria and as is the case with reef rock, anaerobic conditions are achieved by the porosity and the depletion of oxygen by the aerobic process at the surface.
De*Nitrate is an exceptional media for aerobic nitrification as well, making it an ideal biological filter in drip trays, canister filters, sumps or even box filters. As mentioned earlier, it is important to note that at high flow rates (greater than 100 GPH), it will function solely as an aerobic filter and at slow flow rates (less than 50 GPH), it will function as both an aerobic filter and an anaerobic denitrifying filter.
