This species is exceptionally peaceful and may struggle to compete with more boisterous or much larger tank mates. For the best results, keep it with other South American species like Hemigrammus or Hyphessobrycon species, pencil fish, Apistogramma dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and small Loricariids. In a more diverse community tank, it can also coexist with smaller rasboras, barbs, Anabantoids, and West African dwarf cichlids, such as those in the Pelvicachromis genus. Many discus keepers also include a shoal of rummy nose tetras in their display tanks.
It's essential to purchase a group of at least 6, though 10 or more is ideal. These tetras are known for their tight shoaling behaviour, and they truly shine when kept in larger groups. They won't thrive in small numbers and will exhibit a much more impressive display when maintained in a proper-sized shoal.
