This can be a delicate species of Vallisneria, it does demand high lighting to grow successfully. Its leaves grow upwards in a spiral pattern and it tends to be a bit more compact than some of the other Vallis species. Always make sure that the leaves do not get fractured, as soon as this happens the leaf will die off. Many keepers think that this plant cannot be pruned back, this is not true. As long as the leaves are cut back with sharp scissors they will be okay. Leaves that are dying off can also be removed by lifting them away at the base. Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia is a very beautiful, low cultivar of Anubias barteri. 15-25 cm tall and a creeping rhizome from 10-15 cm or more. It is characteristic that the leaves arch considerably between the leaf ribs, and the new leaves are red-brown. The colour combination and leaf shape make it an attractive variety in both large and small aquariums. It flowers frequently under water but does not produce seeds there. Anubias species seem to grow so slowly that they do not realize that they have been submerged. It is not eaten by herbivorous fish.

This is another popular plant that appears in aquariums mainly due to its ease of care making this ideal for beginners. The rosette normally consists of approximately 30 leaves and they will vary in their depth of greenness. Any sign of the leaves turning yellow is an indication that the plant is lacking in iron so a supplement should be added to the tank.
